12th July – Butterfly Timed Count

In 2014, with thanks to the help of volunteers, we were very excited to record Large Heath butterflies on RSPB Airds Moss; the first records made since 2004. Large Heath is a priority species for the UK Biodiversity Action Plan and also a bog specialist. We have just completed re-wetting works on an area of peatland to the west of Airds Moss Special Area of Conservation, called Sheil Farm. We would like to complete a Butterfly Timed Count survey on this site to determine the presence of Large Heath and other butterflies. This will not only help to contribute to a nationwide survey to determine the population and abundance of butterflies in the UK but also as an indicator of the condition of bog habitat on the site.
