Back in 2011 peatland re-wetting works had taken place on Shiel Farm as part of the mitigation for coal mining operations at the nearby Dalfad opencast site. Re-wetting work ceased with the collapse of Scottish Coal but very recently the CEI have been working with RSPB Scotland to continue the re-wetting works on this important site, just to the west of RSPB Airds Moss, as part of the CEI’s peatland enhancement project. We will be re-locating the existing metal underground quadrats (from 2011) using our metal detector! This is part of our long term monitoring programme to determine whether the re-wetting works will have the desired effect over time of raising the water-level and improving the bog vegetation . At this time of year there will be plenty of wildlife about and plants in flower so it is also a perfect opportunity to practise your ID skills and wildlife recording!
